As I sit here watching The Biggest Loser
and eating a giant cookie I realize that I need to do something productive. Thus, instead of getting off the couch, I decide to pick up my very neglected blog.
So I have been a blog-slacker this month, and before I update and explain why… I wanted to write about one of my favourite things, networking, NOT {sidebar: don’t you miss being a kid, and using not all the time? I do, so have decided to bring it back}.
Networking, officially described as “the act of meeting new people in a business or social context,” I am going to describe it as “the act of using your connections to get to places where you don’t deserve.” Think back to all those times when you have had to deal with someone incompetent and you wonder how they ever got that job. Yup, that’s networking.
Anyways, I was told it is a vital form of job-hunting…Therefore, in my proactive search to find that dream job, I extended my networks and talked to many people in my field in the hopes that one would forgo policy and hire me on the spot. I realize how ridiculous that may sound, BUT earlier this summer I met a woman whom that happened to. She emailed her resume to a company, went in for an informational meeting, and they hired her!!! I know. Obviously she has magical charm that I am missing.
So I took my charmless self on many coffee talks, phone calls, even crossed a couple channels and took a plan ride to talk to key people.
The result of all that hard work = A list I’ve complied for my loyal readers
- Now’s a tough time in government and the amount of new hires that are external have dropped to almost nothing.
- I am happy to help as much as I can, I am not sure how much help I will be
- The Province of BC is not hiring, and wants a reduction in overall staff numbers
- With budget-related issues a top priority right now, many of our provincial governments across Canada are not actively recruiting new staff. Nevertheless, I will do my best to keep you posted.
- As you realize, with the worldwide economic crisis, now isn’t a good time for looking for a job in the BC government.
- I can’t think of any openings at the moment.
- I will keep you posted on info that I get. I am sorry not to be more concrete.
- At this time, the BC government doesn’t have any positions available, but I would be happy to forward your resume to my director if that is of interest to you?
- As for private offices, we are not hiring anybody at present.
- The volume of work has slowed down with the change in the economy
- There’s not much available
The following picture pretty much sums up how I feel
